Pitch Perfect 3 is a hilarious and feel-good comedy that stays true to the farcical and fun nature of the Pitch Perfect franchise. With uplifting entertainment at the forefront, the film matches the first Pitch Perfect film in comedic value, just with added silliness and a larger production value.
The film easily passes the Bechdel test within its opening minutes, and shows a multitude of diverse female personalities and relationships in a positive light. The portrayal of female friendship is commendably done, highlighting the kindness and support structure the women give each other, whilst never losing the over the top farcical nature of comedy Pitch Perfect is known for. The sub-plot involving Fat Amy’s criminal father is particularly absurd, but with the constant stream of jokes and humorous moments the film pulls it off well, even featuring a comical fight scene with Fat Amy at the forefront.
The ending of the film is also thoughtfully done, providing a moment of emotional realism amidst the satire in how the women react to potentially disappointing news, lifting each other up and finding a positive perspective to hold on to. Additionally, in the credits the audience is given closure on Aubrey’s relationship with her father, which has been her most significant vulnerability since the first Pitch Perfect film, and one loose string I’m glad they tied in the final moments.
Overall, I think Pitch Perfect 3 was a great comedy, and the perfect ending to the Pitch Perfect trilogy, surpassing Pitch Perfect 2 in quality and comedic value. I would recommend this film to anyone who has enjoyed the past Pitch Perfect films, although I think it also works well alone, and can be enjoyed without seeing the first two if one is new to the franchise.
